Holland-Turkey Relations

Turkey and the Netherlands enjoy good relations and no significant political problems exist between the two countries. The Netherlands, displays a policy which puts the geo-strategic position of Turkey and its importance in the region to the foreground. As an advocate of NATO’s transatlantic ties and central position, the Netherlands is among the countries which attribute importance to Turkey’s role as a member of the Alliance in Europe’s security. 

In this context the Netherlands has a positive attitude towards the improvement of Turkey’s relations with the European institutions, foremost the EU, and the reinforcement of her European identity. The fact that the European Council’s decision to open accession negotiations with Turkey was taken at the December 2004 Brussels Summit under the Dutch Presidency is of significance for the Turkish side.

The Netherlands and Turkey display similar positions in multilateral fora. Both countries enjoy harmonious cooperation within organisations such as NATO and OSCE.

Despite its relatively small area, The Netherlands is among the economically strong countries, plays an important role in international political and economic affairs and sees Turkey as a natural partner. 

The Turkish community of nearly 400.000 people, living in the Netherlands, constitutes an important element contributing to the relations between the two countries. 


The bilateral trade volume between Turkey and the Netherlands has reached to 6.2 billion Dollars in 2008. however, due to global economic crises, this amount decreased to 4.6 billion Dollars in 2009. As of 2010, the trade volume between our countries is 5.6 billion Dollars.

We are happy that the Dutch companies have the largest share in Foreign Direct Investment inflow in Turkey. Currently, there are 1,894 Dutch companies operating in our country. Dutch companies are involved in almost all economic fields. We call on Dutch businessmen to further intensify their investments and establish closer links with the Turkish business community. 

Small and medium size businesses play an important role in the economies of Turkey and Holland. Cooperation between such businesses is an essential tool for diversifying and furthering the commercial relations between Turkey and the Netherlands. There are various new areas, such as shipbuilding, port management, transportation, clean energy, construction and horticulture, where we can increase our cooperation.

The Turkish-Dutch Business Council and the Joint Economic Commission are key instruments to further develop economic and trade relations. It is hoped that these bodies could meet more frequently on a regular basis.

Dutch tourists rank in the first ten among foreigners visiting Turkey. In 2010, approximately 1.1 million Dutch tourists visited Turkey in 2010. So many Dutch citizens also chose Turkey as their second home.
